Hello, I hope you are all doing fine mid-week and are looking forward to a great weekend. As you can see, today’s freebie ( a set of farm tags and vintage labels) is made with vintage farm ephemera and a chicken theme and my favorite, red, cream and black color scheme.
I really had a lot of fun designing these tags even though finding and collecting the vintage images was a a challenge.
Design Inspiration
The background was a great find on the interwebs, where I found a vintage farm almanac page from the turn of the century, including vintage poultry ads. I love the color red for these type of labels, I guess it might be influenced by the red embroidery work I used to watch my Mom make for kitchen towels. According to Wikipedia, here’s a fun fact! “Redwork is a form of American embroidery, also called art needlework, that developed in the 19th century and was particularly popular between 1855 and 1925. It traditionally used red thread, chosen because red dyes were the first commercially available colorfast dyes, in the form of Turkey red embroidery floss.”
As for the details about the freebie, there are 28 elements in all. The tags measure approximately 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ and the red gingham labels are approximately 2.5″ x 1″. I used an actual vintage paper label for the red gingham labels.
Although these tags were made specifically as journal bits, as always, they can either be used for journaling in your project life projects, smashbooks, art journals or other types of memory keeping.
They can also be used in your kitchen/ household labeling.
Facts about the farmhouse freebie:
- This free printable has 28 elements on two 5 1/2″ by 8.5″ jpeg files. (Half US letter)
- The file size is 3.4 MB. Second pdf file is 2.2MB.
- These elements were created at 300 dpi, so your printing results should be very clear and sharp. (The preview pictures on the blog and at Google are at 72 dpi, the actual download’s color is actually much smoother and softer.)
- Printing tip: I would advise that you print on heavy white cardstock, plain or matte to use as die cuts or white sticker paper to use the labels as stickers.
- Color theme: red, cream, black

I’d like to say thanks to all those taking the time to comment, I sure appreciate the gracious “thank yous” and the legitimate “link love” , you guys made October my biggest web traffic month yet, hopefully, it can be repeated in November. Most of my elements are made from commercial use, public domain pictures and scanned vintage ephemera sources; however. if any designer feels their copyright has been infringed upon the freebie will promptly be removed and the freebie will no longer be made available. Designers vary in their restrictions for their terms of use (even for CU items), so although I try to be scrupulous, I may miss some. Original blank red labels found on this website, Knick of Time, a great resource for free vintage items.
