Free Digital Embellishments – Vintage Paper Craft Buttons

Vintage-button-header

Do you love paper crafted items and vintage ephemera?  I love the paper crafted embellishments that so many creative gals (and guys) come up with and of course, there is a gallery of ideas you can access on Pinterest.  I lose time quickly on Pinterest looking at all the paper crafting pins.

If you have visited this blog before you will know that, I really like paper crafts with a vintage or retro theme and when a crafter combines sewing with paper crafting…well, that just about does it for me.  So I almost flipped when I saw these beauties in the following pin on Pinterest.  They were posted on a French website, where I believe the crafter had made them herself, including the packaging.

I liked both the vintage button card, the color theme and the actual embellishments.  So, my creative juices started flowing and I thought I just had to come up with a similar digital version of my own.

Paper-button-embellishments

Voila!, this is the first of my digital embellishments on a vintage style button card. I used patterned digital paper, scanned vintage ephemera images, images of vintage buttons and a couple of other elements.   I got so excited that I went beyond creating the embellishments and created the packaging as well!  It was just a lot of fun working on this mini project.

How to Create an Instagram Like Photostrip in 5 Easy Steps

Picmonkey-photostrip-header

In a past blog tutorial, I showed you how to create Instagram like photos  using  a free online photo editing program called PicMonkey.  This tutorial will cover how to gather those Instagram photos you have created in order to create cute Instagram like photostrips, that you can use to share online or in your crafting.  The process is very easy and you will see that it will take a few moments, once you get a hang of the steps.

Step 1- Uploading Your Photos:

The first step is to  choose the “Make A Collage” function in PicMonkey.  Then you will, upload the photos you have created, I usually use only 3 for each photo strip and I will be using that amount for this tutorial.

Step 2 – Selecting Your Layout:

Once you have uploaded your pictures, you will need to create the template into which you will be placing your photos.  Select  “Layouts” and choose the Ducks in a Row option with 3 squares. You will get a 3 square template in the Landscape position.

Step 3 – Flipping & Sizing Your Layout:

Flip the Layout using the rotate function (located at the bottom) and make sure the pixel measurements say 600 pixels by 1800 pixels.   By using these exact dimensions, you will have a photostrip ready to print that will be at 300 dpi and measure 2” by 6”.  Usually you can place two photostrips side by side onto a 4” x 6” layout in order to print onto 4” x 6”  photo paper.

Most of my elements are made from Commercial use or public domain sources, however if any designer feels their copyright has been infringed upon the freebie will promptly be removed and the freebie will no longer be available.  Designers vary in their restrictions for their terms of use (even for CU items), so although I try to be scrupulous, I may miss some.

Update: (3/29/15)

Here is a new picture of the original  labels printed with regular white cardstock, the previous picture had too little light, so I thought this new image would give you a better idea of the printable.  Also, these were hand cut and yes, I made a few mistakes with my “fussy cutting”.

Happy Father’s Day Greetings and New Freebie Category

dads-day-layout3

We, are one day away from Father’s Day, so I thought I would create a scrapbooking layout that would celebrate the occasion and take the time to share a new blog freebie category!   Unfortunately, my own father passed away a month ago yesterday, and while I wanted to create a scrapbooking layout in his honor for the holiday , it was a little too emotional and raw attempting to complete it…maybe next year.

So, I scrapped that idea and decided to do something else.  In any case , I picked up this awesome freebie picture of a young father protectively gazing over his sweet baby and thought that this layout would do heaps in honoring all great dads!  So…Happy Father’s Day!

The funny thing is when I am not out and about sourcing vintage items.  I find I am spending most of my leisure time digital scrapbooking , illustrating and creating elements, photo editing and hybrid scrapbooking as a hobby with a lot more frequency.  I have even given up any leisure television watching to spend time on all the things I am creating, which wasn’t that much in the first place, but even that has disappeared.    And furthermore,  with  some of the new tools I have been buying  (others I received as awesome birthday gifts), I will have more ideas and freebies to share in the future.

But back to my new freebie category,  what I find is that as I am working on obtaining the right elements for a layout, I  often find myself creating some of my own.  Why? Because I usually just want one particular element, and don’t want to purchase a whole kit online.  For example, for the layout pictured above, I made three versions of the words “Dad” and obviously settled with one.

So, I thought that maybe these elements could get a new life , (instead of sitting around doing nothing on my hard drive or jump drive), and I have decided to share them as digital download freebies for your digital scrapbooking needs.  Most of the elements I will provide will have vintage themed styled elements but there will be a lot of “modern” ones as well.

5 Tips to Look Out For When Shopping For Vintage Ephemera Online

Happy-mail-header

Online shopping has opened a whole new world of convenience and ease to shoppers and that includes vintage ephemera shoppers as well.  There is a whole lot of shoppers that are looking for either mixed media collage kits for their personal art work or elements they can add to their hybrid scrapbooking kits.

Two of the great places that I really enjoy is Etsy and Ebay, for finding vintage paper ephemera  that is not readily available in my local thrift stores ( or would take up too much of my time to find) or craft store.  While all this is good news to both shoppers and sellers, there are a few caveats you should watch out for.

1.   Know Your Purpose for Buying Vintage Paper Goods

If you are buying to collect actual vintage ephemera to add to your collection from an online seller, then you are going to want to check the authenticity of the item being sold and the reputation of the seller or online shop.  Your reasons for buying will vastly differ from the vintage ephemera buyer that wants to use the items for collage, crafting or other personal use.

2.  Check the Reputation of the Seller

In general, you can check the reputation of the seller by checking the feedback on either Etsy or Ebay online stores.  A good seller usually has very good to excellent feedback.  Try to discount that isolated negative buyer’s feedback, if the rest of the written feedback is consistently positive.  Sometimes a lower number of feedback, means the person just started selling online and is working on their online reputation.  Back to the super negative buyer, there are some buyers almost no one can please. Free Printable Download – Father’s Day Gift Tags

Fathers-day-header

Father’s Day is just around the corner and here is this holiday’s freebie!  This freebie blends some  vintage clip art elements,  the colors teal blue, tan  and red as the vintage-y colors that I just keep coming back to. The sentiments, I picked up from viewing other greeting cards and if they sound corny, you can probably attribute that to me! In any case, wishing you all you father’s, dad’s, pop’s, etc. a Happy Father’s Day!

My design inspiration and the color scheme for the gift tags was inspired from a great vintage gift card  printable available via a pin I had pinned on one of my boards a month or so ago.  You might want to check out my boards especially the DIY Crafs |Free Printables board where I pin other hobbyist’s and designers freebies. 😉

Free Vintage Graphic – Victorian Summer Fruit Basket

Today’s vintage graphic is a picture of a lovely, victorian (?) basket of fruit from a public domain site.  I cut out the white background and saved it as a .png file and it’s ready for your crafting use.  The colors in this image are so rich and the fruit looks pretty mouth watering.  Enjoy!

Image Facts:

The picture is smallish in terms of an image suitable for  print quality but for the web it is pretty big,  (it’s all about the dpi = dots per inch). In any case, the pic is  650px by 478px and is a .png file (meaning it’s background is transparent) , and would print out at about a 2″ by 1.5″ rectangle at  300 dpi. The higher resolution can be obtained by clicking on the picture below.

If you save  this image using right-click, on your Windows software its resolution  is only at 72 dpi and it approximately 288px by 212px and it is a jpeg file.
